Backstory
Tei was born a fully mortal human to a relatively poor family. She was selected, unbeknownst to her, to participate in an experimental study by the Japanese government. Japan, under its post-WWII Constitution, is very limited in what it is allowed to do in a military sense. Out of fears of China's expanding influence, Japan developed a biotechnological defense system, disguised as simple bionics developed for the disabled. Tei's intelligence, perseverance, and being from a bloodline of great potential resulted in her being seen as a potential test subject for this system. However, it must be noted Tei barely passed; her weak constitution almost ruled her out.
As Tei was to enter college at Waseda, it just so happened that her father died of a work-induced heart attack, leaving the already poor family in a very tight situation. When researchers approached her with the opportunity to go to college, all expenses paid for all four years, in exchange for her voluntarily participation in a bionics study, Tei jumped to the opportunity.
Tei has no knowledge of any of this, although her knowledge of biology lead her to the conclusion that she must be a cyborg rather than an android, as her memory was wiped via lesioning. (She retained most of her crystallized intelligence; she still remembers facts). Barring an admission from her creators or finding the lesion on an MRI/CT scan, she is unlikely to fully find out everything about her past. Her earliest memory is waking up on June 19th, 2010.
(Note: This backstory is my own making. Tei's canon information does not provide a backstory; the backstory of all Vocaloids and most UTAU are up to fan interpretation.)
